Corn Pizza Recipe Inspired by Japanese Family Dining

One unforgettable taste that my kids brought back from Japan was from Saizeriya, a popular Japanese family-style restaurant chain. They came home talking about Saizeriya’s Corn Pizza, a simple yet delicious creation with white sauce, corn, and plenty of cheese. Corn and cheese make an undeniably irresistible combo, and I couldn’t wait to recreate this at home.

This recipe adds a subtle twist to Saizeriya’s classic corn pizza by incorporating a touch of garlic into the white sauce for extra flavor. It’s a guaranteed kid-pleaser and simple enough to make on busy nights.

RECIPE

Servings: 1 medium sized pizza

Time: 20 min

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb Pizza dough (I bought it at Trader Joe’s)

  • 1/2 can Corn, drained

  • Mozzarella cheese

    Garlic white sauce:

  • 4 tbsp flour

  • 4 tbsp butter

  • 1 cup Milk

  • 2 cloves garlic

  • Salt and pepper

My Kitchen Tools:

Garlic Grater

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Garlic White Sauce
In a pan over low heat, melt the butter. Add grated garlic and cook until fragrant. Gradually add flour, stirring continuously to form a smooth paste.
Slowly pour in the milk, a little at a time, stirring until the sauce begins to thicken. Season with salt and pepper to taste, and set the sauce aside.

  2. Assemble the Pizza
Preheat your oven to 475°F (240°C). On a baking sheet, stretch the pizza dough into a round or oval shape. Spread an even layer of the garlic white sauce over the dough.
Sprinkle the drained corn evenly over the sauce, then top generously with mozzarella cheese.

  3. Bake
Place the pizza in the preheated oven and bake for 10-12 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly, and the crust is golden.

What is Saizeriya Restaurant in Japan?

Saizeriya is a well-loved Japanese restaurant chain that offers a unique blend of Italian-inspired dishes with a Japanese twist. Known for its family-friendly atmosphere and incredibly affordable prices, Saizeriya has become a staple across Japan, attracting families, students, and anyone looking for a casual, tasty meal.

Founded in 1967, Saizeriya originally began as a small Italian restaurant in Chiba Prefecture, Japan. Today, it has grown into a chain with hundreds of locations throughout Japan and even internationally in countries like China, Singapore, and Australia.

Saizeriya’s menu offers a range of Italian-inspired dishes, from pizzas and pasta to grilled meats and salads. However, the offerings are designed to appeal to Japanese tastes, so you’ll often find Japanese ingredients or flavors subtly incorporated. Some of their signature menu items include:

  • Doria: A Japanese-Italian fusion dish featuring rice baked with a rich, cheesy white sauce.

  • Pastas: From classic tomato-based sauces to creamy, Japanese-influenced flavors, their pasta options are crowd-pleasers.

  • Corn Pizza: A unique item beloved by many, especially kids. This pizza combines white sauce, corn, and mozzarella cheese, bringing a slightly sweet and savory taste that’s distinctly different from traditional Italian pizzas.

  • Grilled Escargot: Saizeriya is also known for its affordable escargot, which is quite a novelty in Japan and served with garlic butter.

Another standout feature is their self-serve drink bar, which includes a selection of teas, coffee, soft drinks, and even a wine option - all at a fixed, low price.
