What is Mitarashi Dango?

Mitarashi Dango is a popular Japanese sweet treat, loved for its delightful combination of sweet and savory flavors. It consists of small, round rice dumplings made from glutinous rice flour (mochiko) or a combination of rice flours, skewered on bamboo sticks and grilled to perfection. These rice dumplings are glazed with a syrupy soy sauce mixture, offering a unique taste experience that's both comforting and delicious.

The name "Mitarashi" refers to the sweet soy sauce glaze that is brushed over the dango, giving them their characteristic glossy appearance and distinctive flavor.

Mitarashi Dango has its roots in the ancient city of Kyoto, particularly near the Mitarashi pond in the Shimogamo Shrine. It is believed that the name and recipe were inspired by the bubbles in the Mitarashi pond, symbolized by the round shape of the dango. Over time, this treat spread across Japan and became a staple in traditional Japanese confectionery.
