Sweet Potato Steamed Buns
Nostalgic Satsumaimo, Japanese Sweet Potato Steamed Buns Recipe
There’s something so comforting about this snack that takes me straight back to my childhood. As the air cools and autumn arrives, these Satsumaimo Steamed Buns become the perfect afternoon treat. In Japan, we call these fluffy snacks “Mushi-pan,” which translates to steamed buns. Light, airy, and with just the right amount of sweetness, they’re easy to make and even easier to enjoy.
The addition of Satsumaimo, Japanese sweet potato, adds a delightful earthiness that perfectly complements the season. It's a simple way to turn an everyday snack into something a little more special. The rich, slightly caramelized flavor of Satsumaimo paired with the tender, cake-like texture of Mushi-pan makes this a nostalgic favorite that I love to share with my own family now.
RECIPE
Servings: 6-7 pcs
Time: 20 min
Ingredients:
1 cup pancake mix
1/2 cup milk
1 egg
1/2 tbsp sugar
1 tbsp oil
1 Satsumaimo (Japanese sweet potato)
Instructions:
Heat a pan with water and set up your steamer.
Peel and dice the Satsumaimo into small cubes, then microwave them for 2 minutes until they soften slightly.
In a mixing bowl, whisk the egg until smooth. Add the milk, sugar, and honey, and whisk again until combined.
Gradually mix in the pancake mix, then add the oil and stir until the batter is smooth. Finally, fold in the softened Satsumaimo cubes.
Line small pudding cups with baking liners and fill each cup with 2 scoops of the batter. (If you don’t have liners, rub some cooking oil in the cups, like I did today)
Place the filled cups in the steamer and steam on low-medium heat for about 10 minutes, or until the buns are puffed and cooked through.
